Just as regular exercise and visits to the doctor are good forms of preventative medicine, your car needs preventative maintenance for many of the same reasons. Auto preventative (or preventive) maintenance reduces the likelihood that your vehicle will require major costly and inconvenient repairs. Preventative maintenance also ensures that your automobile is operating at maximum efficiency.

Regular preventative maintenance should include a number of services, many of which involve inspection. Your oil, coolant, and transmission fluid levels should all be checked regularly to detect any possible problems early and to top up any of those fluids if necessary. Furthermore, your engine’s air filter should be inspected regularly as should your tire pressure and tread. Lastly, the lights on your vehicle—headlights, brake lights, turn signals, etc.—should be inspected.

Not all of your car’s components need preventative maintenance as frequently, however other components can benefit from maintenance on their own schedules. For example, you don’t have to have your battery’s performance checked as often as you check your transmission fluid, but it still should be checked regularly. The same is true of your shocks, struts, spark plug, and serpentine belt. Coolant fluid exchange is also good preventative maintenance, and your windshield wipers must be replaced periodically. Lastly, seasonal tire changes are always a must here in Canada.
